Drawing Creative Pathways with Patricia Watwood
April 11-13, 2024
In this three-day workshop, we will combine concepts of mindfulness with studio practices of drawing, watercolor and visualization to learn the skills of building a meaningful habit of creativity. Each day we will consider various aspects and challenges to creative work: intentions, beginning rituals, habits, prioritization, embodiment and immersion. Through these lessons, artist will nurture a sustainable practice that helps you hear your personal voice. Art projects will include drawing (in graphite), intuitive watercolor, collage and vision boards, in a personal sketchbook that will be a template for your ongoing work.
Sessions
- Intentions: Rituals of Beginning
- Finding Flow State: nature, embodiment, sources of wonder
- Nurturing Personal Vision: creative compost, visualization
- Obstacles : meet your Monster and build strong habits
- Model Session: understanding subject and gesture with a clothed figure model
- Composition sketches and tools
Required Materials
- Stillman and Birn Premium Zeta Wirebound Sketchbook - 7”x10” (25-Sheets)
- Two to five Watercolor or mixed media brushes with gold nylon synthetic, sable like, soft natural hair, or sable: one pointed round #8 and one 3/4 wide wash or mop, either flat or oval or similar
Optional Materials
- Magazines for tearing out pictures—landscape, art, lifestyle, home, garden, travel
- Colored pencils, markers
- Scissors
About the Artist
Patricia Watwood (b. 1971, St. Louis, MO) earned her MFA with honors from New York Academy of Art in 1999 and studied with Jacob Collins as a founding member of the Water Street Atelier (now Grand Central Atelier). She is an oil painter, draftsman, teacher and author. Her subjects are primarily portraits, women and figures, incorporating myth and narrative. Her book on drawing, creative practice, and mindfulness, The Path of Drawing, was published by Monacelli Studio Press in 2022.
